I’m so sorry for the lack of updates! As some of you may know, I fell ill after the Winter Festival, which I took as a sign that my body was telling me to stop. The Caffi had occupied my every waking thought since April, and on the few days where I wasn’t working, my mind was never far away. I was physically and mentally exhausted, and even when I got to Austria for Christmas, I was still having nightmares about running out of milk, burning stir-fries, and chasing children off the bowling green.
Anyway, when I got back to rainy Blaenau in the New Year, I heard about an opportunity to go back out to Austria, and train with Team GBX Boardercross. For those of you who don’t know, boardercross is a discipline of snowboard racing, where four riders race down a course of banked turns, rollers and other obstacles. My brother, Maki, is pretty good at it, and having watched him compete in the Brits a few years ago, I started to wonder whether I could give it a shot.
So I did! I’m currently living in the team house in Aschau, and took part in my first competition at the start of the month. After just three days of training, I represented my country and came 30th in the Czech nationals in Dolni Morava. No, that’s not last!
Since then I’ve been training with the team most days (injuries permitting) working on different aspects of snowboarding that will hopefully help me in my next race, which will be in Italy on the 2nd of March. I’m not sure what will happen after that, but I’m hoping to make it to the Brits myself, at the start of April.
I’m still aiming to open the cafe before Easter, but I’ll have to ask you to bear with me while I try to live out my non-kitchen-based dream over here in the snow! I haven’t forgotten about the Caffi, and I’ve got loads of ideas and plans for the spring, which I can’t wait to unveil in due course.
While my body may be battered and bruised, my mind is refreshed and ready to get stuck back in! And I miss you guys! Almost as much as I miss decent coffee!
In the meantime, if you would like to follow my adventures, you can do so on my new travel blog, On Board with Kiki 🙂
